Through mid-March, Jacob Bridgeman sits at No. 1 in the FedEx Cup standings with 1,398 points, ranks 4th on Tour in SG: Total (2.181), and has not finished outside the top 20 in a single start this season. The PGA Tour named him one of the five biggest surprises of the season. That label sells it short. The 26-year-old from Inman, South Carolina has gone from fringe top-30 to a bona fide top-10 player in the span of five starts.
A First Win at Riviera, With Tiger Watching
Bridgeman's breakthrough came at the Genesis Invitational in February, Tiger Woods' Signature Event at Riviera Country Club. He shared the lead with Marco Penge after 36 holes, then blew the field open with a third-round 64 that gave him a six-stroke lead and tied the 54-hole scoring record at Riviera.
Sunday was a different story. Bridgeman birdied the 1st and 3rd holes, then gave shots back with bogeys on 4, 7, and 16, turning a comfortable margin into a one-stroke finish. A 3-footer on 18 and two closing pars sealed a final-round 72 and a total of 18-under 266. The win earned him $4 million and 700 FedEx Cup points.
"This is way, way better than I've ever dreamt it. I thought it would be a lot easier than that."
The Clemson Pipeline
Bridgeman's path to the Tour ran through Clemson University, where he studied mathematical science, won five collegiate events, set the program record with 50 career rounds in the 60s, and earned ACC Golfer of the Year honors in 2022. He finished second in the 2022 PGA Tour University ranking and earned his full PGA Tour card via the Korn Ferry Tour in 2023, finishing 14th on the season-long points list.
Before college: three 3A individual state golf titles at Chapman High School and the 2016 Carolinas Junior Boys' Championship. His long-time mentor, Tommy Biershenk, held PGA Tour membership in 2012 and made 147 career Korn Ferry Tour starts.
A Season Without a Weak Start
The results tell the story: T18 at the WM Phoenix Open, T8 at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, a win at the Genesis Invitational, T18 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, T10 at THE PLAYERS Championship. Four top-10 finishes in five starts. Zero results outside the top 20. He currently sits 52nd in the Official World Golf Ranking.
